What are consolidated molasses solids?

Consolidated molasses solids (CMS), also sold as fermented or condensed molasses solubles, is the mineral-rich residue left after molasses has been fermented for ethanol production. It carries nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium along with a high load of readily available carbohydrate, which is why it works as a fertiliser, a soil conditioner and a livestock feed additive.

What growers and feedlot managers ask us most about CMS.

Is CMS the same as molasses?

No. Molasses is the sugar-refining by-product. CMS is what remains after that molasses has been fermented, so it is more concentrated in minerals and lower in fermentable sugar.

How is it applied to soil?

Usually diluted and applied through irrigation or as a broadcast soil application ahead of planting. Rates depend on soil carbon status and crop.

Can it be fed to livestock?

Yes, it is widely used as an energy and mineral supplement in cattle and sheep rations to improve palatability and intake. Introduce it gradually.

Will it acidify or salt my soil?

CMS carries a mineral load, including potassium, so on high-rate or repeat programmes we work from a soil analysis to keep your base saturation balanced.

Does it feed soil microbes?

That is its main strength. The available carbohydrate is an immediate energy source for soil biology, which is why it pairs well with microbial and compost programmes.
